Every workplace contends with this; Sometimes conflict seems the norm, maybe it takes too long to get things done, and problems lurk in many corners. Too often individuals and groups seem to work more against each other rather than with each other. As a leader, what do you do? How do you get individuals and teams, who are all part of the bigger picture, willingly “pulling on the oars” in the same direction?
Level 1: Individual Employee Engagement – Leaders learn new leadership skills, new ways to manage performance that gets results, without resistance. Using a sophisticated computer simulation tool you and the other participants lead a Supervisor from struggling to success. The exercise is intensive, comprehensive and realistic. The answers do not come easily, but you leave the training with new principles to apply, a new language and techniques that you can use tomorrow!

Calvin is from Toronto where he engages a large team utilizing his leadership skills with youth and community leaders through Youth Unlimited. His passion and expertise is seeing transformation of young people in an urban context. He has used his facilitation skills with Eagle's Flight (most recently training Tim Horton's executives across Canada). He also serves as the Canadian Director for Sonlife in which he facilitates workshops and training for non-profit organizations (and churches) across Canada and the USA. In 2016, he received a well-earned doctorate degree from Acadia University in Nova Scotia
MANAGING YOURSELF WHILE LEADING PEOPLE AND TEAMS
We all want a workplace free of difficult people and conversations, but we know conflict is inevitable. However, there is healthy and unhealthy conflict. Patrick Lencioni author of, “The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team”, asserts that one of the five behaviours is ‘engaging in healthy conflict’. If your goal is to create and sustain a culture of trust, respect and resiliency, then it’s a matter of learning and applying the soft skills to assist you and your team to have those conversations.
Managers are keenly aware that they are always balancing two critical areas of leadership in directing others….tasks and relationships. Both are vital to growing strong teams. If you are a leader, having difficult conversations can be daunting and stressful. Ignoring disruptive behaviours or attitudes does little to resolve the issue. It is naturally uncomfortable, but productive conflict focused on concepts and ideas is essential for any great team to grow. As a leader, you will develop some skills and learn some critical steps in preparing you for the most challenging interactions. These skills can be used to manage people in three ways: leading down (those who report to you), managing peer to peer relationships and managing up (those to whom you report)
Participants begin the training with a self-assessment. The “Conflict Strategies Inventory” helps one understand which one of five conflict strategies is preferred and how to work with others with a different style. Then, participants develop new approaches and solutions, tackle recurrent conflict issues, inspire interest and creativity and introduce conflict management skills to teams.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Most appropriate for people in the midst of workplace conflict, but all individuals, from frontline employees to team members, managers, directors or owners.
